We are glad to share that three ABG Intellectual Property team members have completed the necessary exams to be qualified by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) to practise as industrial property agents. Their names are Tomás Llamas, Sandra Ortuzar, and Isabel García.

With this certification, they join Juan AriasChristine WeimannCecilia RanillaMarta RodríguezVirginia GómezAna Herreros, Diana Mariné and Juan Manuel Soto to increase the number of Spanish Patent and Trademark Agents in ABG IP from eight to eleven and to complement our 19 European patent attorneys.

Undoubtedly, this is a team to be proud of and distinguishes us as a strong national and international player in the field of IP.

Three new Spanish Industrial Property Agents

Tomás joined ABG in 2007 and he is an associate in the Chemistry, Materials & Pharma Departments. He is also European Patent Attorney since 2012 and holds a PhD in Chemistry from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. His practice is focused on patent prosecution and opinion work in the area of organic chemistry and related fields.

Sandra has over ten years of intellectual property experience and is part of the ABG Euskadi team. Sandra holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the Universidad del País Vasco and works in our Engineering, Physics, and ITC departments.

Isabel joined ABG’s Trademarks Department in 2019. Isabel holds a degree in Modern Languages and Management from the Universidad de Deusto, as well as a Master’s degree in Legal Translation from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas.

Qualification as an Industrial Property Agent

According to the Rules for the Execution of Law 24/2015, of July 24, on Patents, in the tests that they have just passed, it is evaluated “whether the candidate has a sufficiently broad knowledge of the national and international rules that regulate and affect industrial property and whether he or she is familiar with the management of such knowledge, such that he or she can apply it under the conditions that are usually encountered by a Patent and Trademark Agent during the exercise of his profession, including knowledge of foreign languages“.

Our colleagues Tomás, Sandra and Isabel will be able to register in the SPTO Special Registry of Patent and Trademark Agents, enabling them to “advise, assist, and represent third parties in obtaining the various modalities of Industrial Property and in the defense before the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office of the rights derived from them” (Art.176.1 of Law 24/2015, July 24, on Patents).

Congratulations for overcoming this challenge! We are confident that this will be a milestone in your respective professional careers.
