ABG Intellectual Property has once again been recognised in the IAM Patent 1000 ranking, one of the most prestigious international directories in the field of intellectual property.
In this latest edition, the firm has retained the highest distinction, Gold, in patent prosecution in Spain, as well as Bronze in litigation.
The IAM Patent 1000 editorial highlights ABG Intellectual Property’s distinctive positioning in the Spanish market:
“ABG Intellectual Property has established itself as one of Spain’s most intellectually exacting patent boutiques, distinguished by a practice that privileges technical mastery and strategic discipline over volume-driven expansion.”
The directory also underscores the firm’s strength in supporting clients through the most critical stages of a patent’s lifecycle:
“The firm’s defining strength lies in its ability to accompany patents through their most vulnerable phases.”
It further recognises the outstanding technical calibre of the team:
“It’s a powerhouse team composed of very skilled lawyers, most of whom are PHD holders, with deep knowledge and experience in the most pressing patent matters.”
A team recognised as “recommended individuals”
In addition to the firm-wide recognition, IAM Patent 1000 has once again distinguished several professionals from ABG Intellectual Property as “recommended individuals”, acknowledging their contributions across different technical and strategic areas.
Below are the directory’s comments on each of them, reproduced verbatim:
“A founding architect of the firm, Juan Arias continues to shape ABG’s approach to portfolio development and high-level patent strategy. With deep experience before the EPO, he has been involved in the construction and defence of patent families designed to withstand opposition and appeal scrutiny.”
“Her work in pharmaceutical and chemical patent matters includes involvement in European opposition proceedings and strategic validity assessments. She is particularly noted for her ability to interrogate complex experimental data and translate it into legally decisive argumentation, a skill critical in high-stakes disputes over therapeutic and chemical inventions.”
“A senior presence in Madrid, Fernando Prieto brings long-standing experience across physics-based inventions, ICT and engineering. He has advised on patent strategies and enforcement-related analysis in technically intricate fields and is frequently relied upon where matters demand a steady synthesis of scientific understanding and procedural foresight.”
“A central figure in the firm’s Barcelona office. Renowned for his command of EPO proceedings, he has played a sentinel figure in opposition and appeal matters in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, including cases where patents have been maintained following intensive technical and legal challenge. His practice reflects a rare equilibrium between scientific fluency and procedural economy, allowing him to advance arguments that are both technically persuasive and jurisprudentially robust.”
“In biotechnology and biochemistry, Agustín Alconada contributes advanced scientific insight to the firm’s prosecution and freedom-to-operate work. He has been involved in patent matters concerning highly specialised biological technologies, where early identification of validity and infringement risk is essential to informed commercial decision-making.”
“In engineering and ICT, Pablo Calvo is a key contributor to the firm’s most technically demanding mandates. He has advised on patent portfolios covering computational and industrial technologies, including matters involving freedom-to-operate analysis and strategic portfolio expansion. His analytical approach is especially well suited to inventions that integrate software, hardware and process-based innovation.”

“In Bilbao, Iain McGeoch brings a distinctly international sensibility to contentious and advisory work. His practice spans prosecution, infringement analysis and strategic opinion work in chemistry and pharma-related technologies, and he is regularly involved in matters requiring coordination across jurisdictions. His engagement with international IP bodies further informs his ability to situate individual disputes within broader policy and enforcement trends.”
“Laura Montoya plays an increasingly visible role in the firm’s litigation-adjacent and strategic advisory work. She has been involved in patent disputes and arbitration proceedings, as well as in the design and implementation of IP strategies aligned with broader business objectives, particularly for clients operating across multiple jurisdictions.”
